Food Production Workers Wanted For Food Picking Jobs 2022

A labor shortage is threatening the food industry in Canada, with a projected shortage of 15 to 20 percent of the workforce by 2022. The aging workforce and a chronic labor shortage have prompted a coalition of lobby groups to call for an emergency expansion of the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program. The organization submitted a proposal to the federal government in December calling for an additional 50,000 TFWs to fill these positions.

WORKERS IN DEMAND:

While the current labor shortage affects communities across the country, it will wreak havoc on Canadians from coast to coast. The food and beverage industry already has a 20% vacancy rate, and this pandemic is compounding problems like early retirement and burnout among workers. Providing a stable, well-paid workforce is essential to the survival of the industry. However, Canada’s current situation is not ideal for this type of employment.

FOOD SUPPLY COMPANIES:

The shortage of TFWs in the food industry will impact communities where the plants are located and harm the health of Canadians. As a result, the union is proposing a pathway to permanent residency for workers in the food industry. This proposal is designed to address a short-term problem and complement longer-term measures. By creating a pathway to permanent residency for TFWs in the food and beverage industry, Canada’s food supply sector will have a stable and reliable workforce.

WAGES & SALARIES:

The Ontario Court of Appeal rejected a three-year collective agreement between UFCW 1518 and UFCW 247 members. The new deal is expected to increase wages, vacation days and shift premiums. In addition to this, UFCW 1518 and UFCW 501 recently ratified a new collective agreement, which includes increased overtime and wages. If this is not enough to keep up with the rising costs of the industry, the unions will seek to negotiate more effective pay for these workers.

WEEKENDS AND DUTY HOURS:

The newly ratified collective agreement between the UFCW and Maple Lodge Farms includes a new collective agreement that increases wages, vacation days and shift premiums. The agreement reflects the demands of the two unions, but does not include the unions’ respective membership. In addition, it does not cover all UFCW members. It excludes a significant portion of UFCW members. For this reason, the UFCW must ratify the collective agreement that will be implemented now.
